Hawaii Island affectionately known as the Big Island to locals is a class of its own. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, no traffic, but also you see is volcanic rock. We stayed at the beautiful beach resort of Hilton Waikoloa Village Big Island Hawaii.
The Big Island is the youngest of all the Hawaii islands. Kilauea Volcano is an active volcano that first erupted in 1952. Since then there have been many eruptions the latest as recently as 2018.
Aside from the obvious visiting the Volcano, I love to visit and stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Big Island. This is a property where families choose when visiting the Big Island of Hawaii.
In fact, along with tourists from out of state this where the locals vacation as well. Visitors from the neighbor islands also choose this hotel. Why not? You basically have everything at this property. That is why it is called a Village.
The property most popular residents and attraction are the dolphins. Here you can visit the dolphins and watch them play while you are having lunch at one of the terraces.
If you are an adventurous type, kids and adults are also allowed to swim with the dolphins. For my kids, this is why we came here. A great family destination where you can enjoy or relax all day at the property.
Amenities at the property are endless. There are activities for kids, if you want a private pool for adults there is also a specific area. You could choose from kayaking, to snorkeling, or paddle board.
I am a fitness guy, so I spend my time at the Kohala spa. I can spend my time working out on a treadmill, finish up on some weights, then finish up and relax in their hot tub or sauna. My alone time is my massage which caps off my vacation.
Ocean Tower Room
The guest room was great. Clean nice room overlooking the golf course and ocean view. Room was spacious and quiet. One thing great about this room was that there was also the boat landing pavilion on the ground level incase you were hungry or needed a late night drink.
After spending a day or two entirely at the resort, the best part of the Big Island is its natural surroundings. It is best to get a rent a car and drive to some of the popular spots or beaches. When visiting to Kilauea Volcano it can take an entire day.
But on your journey to the volcano I would make a pit stop in Hilo farmers market. Here, you will find almost all sorts of tropical fruits from papayas, mangos, rambutan, and beautiful flower arrangements.
The drive through the Hamakua coast is breath taking with scenic views and waterfalls along the way.
Hawaii Island, Big Island, is definitely a place worth visiting. You will feel the power of the volcano and it’s natural surroundings that constantly reminds you who is in control. Black volcanic rock that encompasses most of the island. Black tar like lava rocks all over the island.
Anytime or at any moment the volcano can just erupt. In the meantime, staying at the Kohala Coast of the Big island, enjoying the comforts of the resort, makes you forget that you are actually staying on an active volcano.
Kamuela Provision Company
Make sure you make reservations first and choose the sunset time. Depending what season Winter or Summer, sunset could be at 530pm or 630pm. But here you will find fantastic sunset view during your dinner. I recommend this restaurant highly.
Tram ride
The tram ride was relaxing and quick. The property is large so taking the tram is a quick way to move from one end to the other end.
If you are not in a rush, take a walk along the coast line towards the lagoon for some snorkeling or lounging.
Lagoon Grill
Great burgers and fries for lunch. Lagoon Grill is a great place for lunch. Watch the dolphins swim by you while you dine.
